Iron toxicity, also known as iron overdose or iron poisoning, occurs when there is an excessive accumulation of iron in the body, leading to potentially life-threatening damage to organs and tissues. This condition can arise from taking too much iron in supplement form, or from a genetic disorder like hemochromatosis, where the body absorbs too much iron from the diet. In acute cases, iron toxicity can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and dehydration within hours of ingestion.

If not treated promptly, the excess iron can lead to severe complications such as liver damage, metabolic acidosis, shock, and even death. Chronic iron overload, often seen in untreated hemochromatosis, can result in long-term damage to the liver, heart, and pancreas, potentially leading to conditions such as cirrhosis, heart disease, and diabetes. Immediate medical intervention is critical in cases of iron toxicity, and treatment may involve the use of chelation therapy to bind and remove excess iron from the body.
